We are just over two weeks into school, and less than a week away from our exciting trek to outdoor school at Camp Magruder, near Rockaway Beach, on the Oregon Coast. Although it's been a mere two weeks, it seems as though we've been at it for months, thanks to our beautiful blended classes, and the grade shift. It is truly a wonderful gift to have so many returning students. No time has been wasted.
Our first class read-aloud, Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, was a fantastic jump start to our planning of Roots of Responsibility Day. Students explored a multicultural view into the creation of a community garden in urban Cincinatti, Ohio. Alder East, in conjunction with Alder West, is in charge of putting on the event which will be held on Friday, October 23rd.
Beginning this week, and ramping up the week after outdoor school, we are becoming "weed experts". Invasive weeds are a serious problem in our local communiy and globally, and our Alder students are ready to become stewards of the land. Students will be sharing their knowledge with our school community on Roots of Responsiblity Day, with two unique workshops: "What are your roots?" and "Invasive Weeds". Expect to hear more about invasive weeds in the coming weeks.
As your family prepares for outdoor school next week, please make sure that your student comes prepared for rain with a waterproof coat, and boots. It may be wet out there, and I want everyone to be warm and dry at camp.
